Ethanol vs Methanol

Ethanol: Good alcohol, in beer
Methanol: Bad alcohol. Drinking makes you go blind. AKA. Rubbing Alcohol. Also used as fuel, antifreeze, solvents, etc.
Moonshine USED to mean any illegally distilled alcohol. But now means just strong booze? lol

Moonshine Makes you go blind / Unsafe?

Short Answer: Not since the 1930s.
During Prohibition, distillers + gangsters would:
  • Would use anything to up the proof of their alcohol, like mix in Antifreeze, rubbing alcohol, etc.
  • Would distill in MASSIVE backyard stills (400 gallons+) Making the 1% Methanol created possibly ALL in one bottle!
  • Would use old Radiators as their condensers. Which could contain out Antifreeze)
  • Would use lead-based solder (the only type available then)
  • Were often poorly trained, and in a rush to get it all done without getting caught.
  • Not know to pour out the "Heads" and "Tails" from each batch. Or keep it in order to raise profits.
Nowadays, none of these should be an issue.
