Our PlanInternet Quick Fix
Ever had your internet go down, you reset your router (duh), and double check everything. Then you call shaw / Telus, and after 20 minutes on hold of them triple-checking you're not a complete idiot, they "do something" and it magically starts working?
Well that is called a "Router Reset", and it is NOT just you unplugging and replugging your flashy-light box.
It is resetting your routers address on THEIR end of the network.
Well.... after 22 years of me asking if there was a way I could do it myself WITHOUT calling+waiting for them, they finally have a way!
Log into your Shaw (on another internet connection, like your phone / neighbours / McDonalds)
Go to "Modem" and Click "Reset"
That's it... I bet that will fix your problem!
If it doesn't here is the direct-access line to Tech Support to skip the wait: 250-475-5655
Unfortunately to remove, and re-register your modem on the Shaw network, known as "Reprovisioning" can only be done by Shaw Tech Support :(.
Special Case of Third-Party ISPs
Background
If you have Third-party internet (Such as TechSaavy, or LightSpeed) ISP, you may have had everything working great for months, when suddenly your internet goes down. It's not a network outage. You paid your bill, so simple solution: Reset your router, like you did with Shaw, right?
Except it doesn't work. What Gives?
Well, I have done it over and over again, called tech support, and without permanent success. Until I followed the steps below to a *KEY*.
Why?
Essentially, when you have a Shaw modem, and Shaw changes their routing/registration tables, they update THEIR modems. But for some reason they can't / won't update/re-add yours. Third-party providers use Shaw / Telus for the "Last-Mile" of service, and use everyone those same routing tables.
But in B.C. especially, I have been told they don't allow Third-Party Tech Support the same abilities to connect/update/re-add your modem.
So since you have a third-party modem, they don't have the ability to update yours. Leaving your old, bad address still in the table.
Don't worry! This technique of actually disconnecting your coaxial connection, *THEN* turning on the modem and waiting for it to *fully* boot, *then* connecting your Coaxial to Shaw*, it will register it correctly!
One extra tiny step makes the whole process actually work!!
Fix
The details of this seem very close to what you have done in the past, but trust me, the devil is in the details, one extra step, and waiting 30-more seconds will probably do the trick! This order is very important!!!
- First unplug your router/computer, and modem from both power AND COAXIAL.
- Leave them unplugged for at least a minute (So Shaw sees you disappear from the network).
- Plug-in your router (To power ONLY)
- Wait 30 secs
- (KEY!) Plug-in the coaxial cable! (This re-registers you on the Shaw domain!!)
- THEN, once all four green lights are solid, plug in your router and computers as you did before.
P.S. This is just the fix I discovered, and MY theory, so please comment if you know more.
