Bosco Leg Injury
Bosco hurt his leg, badly, on Aug 19 2018, while playing lightly with another dog. Here are all my notes, research, options, and decisions I made.Updated 3 years ago
Bosco has developed lumps on his underside during 2020 / 2021: Lipoma
- We had them removed on Mar 25, 2021.
- They removed 6 to 10, but weren't able to get them all.
Bosco hurt his leg, badly, on Aug 19 2018, while playing lightly with another dog:
- He didn't bare-weight on it very often.
Close to what happened to Bosco
Good News:
- Blood work great.
- He has a Little Arthritis.
- Bosco is in good spirits
- Bosco lives an active lifestyle, yet doesn't do extreme play (jumping, wrestling, etc). Many short walks are good for recovery.
Bad News:
- Bosco has FULLY torn cruciate ligament
- Diagnosis, Chiropractors, and Xrays. + Blood work was $1800
- His recovery is going slower then expected.
- It took him 10 days to toe-touch. Vet expected/hoped 1 day.
CHOSEN Option: Less Invasive Surgery:
- "Extracapsular Repair"
- Bosco had this surgery Sept 12th
- Can be done at Hillside Vet
- Quicker Recovery then TPLO
- $2500 + $600 Physio + $300 Medications
Extracapsular Repair Surgery
Option B) Invasive surgery:
- TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomies) Surgery *** Gold Standard
- Done by Doctor Bollinger @ Central Vet
- Takes about an hour.
- 6-8 weeks very well
- 12 weeks nearly better
- 95% of clients full, fun active life.
- $5200
AL Human vs Dog
Recovery:
- Physio: underwater treadmill x 10 $550 @ Hillside Vet
- 1 month :Bed + Poop only
- 2 months: No stairs
- 3 months: Short Walks
- 4 months: No playing.
Drugs:
- Cartrothen: Nutritional Supplement Injection. Cartilage repair, anti-inflammatory. once week x 4, once a month x 4 $25 each.
End Result:
- Bosco has been doing great.
- He Loves his Rehabilitations
- Everyone at Hillside Vet was amazing
- I need to find a CHEAP fulltime-supply of cartrothen.
- Only Regret: Should have gotten the surgery sooner
